Student Internships

Many different types of student internships are available with the Public Defender for qualified applicants. All internships are limited in number with competitive selection processes. Students must be currently enrolled in a degree-granting program to be eligible. No internships are paid, but the Public Defender will cooperate with conditions of stipend programs, including the Federal Work-Study Program.

Law student internships
Three types of internships are available to law students in the summer and during the academic year. Summer clerkships are fulltime for a minimum of 10 weeks; academic-year clerkships require at least 16 hours per week. Read more.

Social work
Internships are available for a limited number of students enrolled in accredited educational programs leading to an M.S.W. or B.S.W., for periods of one year or eighteen months, with a commitment of at least ten hours per week. No semester-long internships are available. With licensed clinicians on its staff, the RIPD offers qualified supervision of M.S.W. candidates. Read more.

Undergraduate internships
Undergraduate internships are available each semester, including summer, and during winter intercessions. Approximately 12-16 interns are accepted statewide each term. Interns must be able to complete at least 8 hours a week, for the full term. Interested interns should send resume and cover letter at least two months before the beginning of the term to Rhode Island Public Defender, Intern Coordinator, 160 Pine Street, 3rd Floor, Providence R.I. 02903.
